Sony Music Entertainment Inc last month shipped about 5,000 copies of "Biograph," a three-CD compilation of hits and rare tracks. It was originally released in 1985 in a cardboard box; the reissue was repackaged as a double CD jewel case. It was on sale for just a few days before Sony learned of the problems. Biograph is a 53-track box set compilation spanning the career of American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on November 7, 1985 by Columbia Records. Consisting of 53 released and unreleased tracks from 1962 to 1981, the box set was released as a five-LP set, a three-cassette tape set, and a three-compact disc set. Biograph reached No. 33 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. and has been certified platinum by the RIAA.

In 1985, Bob Dylan's Biograph established the blueprint for weighty rock & roll retrospectives, blending rare and unreleased material with classics over the course of a three-disc set that wound up being the template for rock & roll boxes for the next 20 years or so. While Dylan is indeed a negligible album, it isn't unlistenable -- it has a pleasant pop/rock sheen and Dylan sings in his Nashville Skyline croon. Nevertheless, it adds nothing to his canon, and only die-hard fans with a perverse sense of humor will find the record worth a listen. Dylan has been the subject of six documentaries, starred in three theatrical films, appeared in an additional eight films and 10 home videos, and is the subject of the biographical tribute film I'm Not There. He has written and published lyrics, artwork and memoirs in 11 books and three of his songs have been made into children's books. The only other complete take was recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 24 Oct 1963 (take 3, 7:43), so that must be the Biograph version. Thanks to Bob Stacy for reminding me that this was the conclusion of Clinton Heylin, who thought that the Biograph version is much more polished than the alternate take, and must date from the second day.
